The Geographical Location Climate and Culture of the Bahamas
The group of 700 atolls and cays in the western Atlantic Ocean are called the Bahamas. According to the geographical location of the Bahamas out of the atolls and cays only 30 to 40 are inhabited. The Andros Island is the largest among all and is situated at 120 miles southeast of Florida. To the northwest of the Andros Island lies the Bimini Islands. The Grand Bahamas Islands is situated at the North which is the home to the second largest city of Freeport. In the east lies the island of Great Abaco and in the far south the island of Great Inagua is situated. The island of Great Inagua is the second largest island in the country.
The highest point is situated only seventy meters above sea level on the Long Island. The capital city of Nassau located in the New Providence reaches only an elevation of thirty seven meters. The rock types at the Bahamas are of oolitic limestone though the land of the Bahamas had a foundation of fossil coral. The rock and the stones are derived due to the disintegration of coral reefs and sea shells. Low scrubs cover the surface of the islands. Pine yards stretch all along the islands that are situated at the North. The islands having the pine yards are namely the Grand Bahama, New Providence, Great Abaco and the Andros.
The geographical location of the Bahamas suggests that there are some fertile thin soils in the Bahamas along with some freshwater lakes and a single river that exists on the Andros Islands. The climate at the archipelago is semitropical and two seasons exist here namely the summer and the winter. The summer extends from May to November. Warm moist and tropical air masses move through the Caribbean all throughout the summer. Depending on the geographical location of the Bahamas the summer temperature generally lies from 21 °C to 34 °C. The relative humidity lies in between 60% to 100%. The months of December to April experience the winters at the Bahamas. The average winter months are generally 15 °C to 24 °C in temperature. Short duration rainfall occurs often in the islands that are followed by strong gusty winds.
Due to the unique geographical location of the Bahamas, the easterly winds predominantly exist throughout the year but tends to be northeasterly in the months of October to April and southeasterly from the months of May to September. Most of the hurricanes that occur in the Bahamas are generally between July and October. The visit to the Bahamas should be a pleasant one as the islands lie in the heart of nature’s beauty. The sandy beaches with the breaking waves at the shores make it heavenly and one of the most popular holiday destinations of the world.
The African and European cultures mix onto to form a unique Bahamian culture. As the commercialism of the U.S. culture cropped in beyond the boundaries of the Bahamas, the music and the entire culture got influenced to the modern times. But yet the Bahamian culture thrives to maintain its own heritage and culture. Religious practice of folk magic and sorcery are popular in many of the Family Islands of the Bahamas.
